Many people are teaching English online instead of in person. Online ESL teachers can make more than at other jobs that require a long commute and long hours in an office.
The requirements for an online teacher can be rather simple for many jobs. If you are a native English speaker or have a near-native accent then you can find a job teaching English online.
Some online schools require that you have a degree or teaching certificate such as a TEFL. You can make more money at those schools since they have a higher salary and rate per hour.

PalFish – Teaching From Your Phone
PalFish is a mobile app that allows great flexibility and lets you earn money just by having conversations with ESL students. You set your own hours and get paid by the minute. You can earn as much as $30 per hour.
The minimum is $10, and most people start out at $13 or $14 per hour. PalFish has a minimal weekly commitment of 4 hours.
To build up your reputation quickly, you can live stream publicly to a large group of audiences and collect more positive reviews.
You don’t need to be a native English speaker to work for PalFish, but you’ll need a bachelor’s degree. TEFL/TESOL Certification and teaching experiences are optional.
SayABC – High Rate Per Hour
SayABC offers some of the highest rates for teaching English online, up to $28 for a 40-minute lesson (which is the standard class length). There are no minimum hours and SayABC creates a schedule for you based on your preferences. However, to get fully booked, you should provide at least 14 weeks of availability.
All lessons are in a group of four students, whom you will continue teaching for three months. The class atmosphere is usually fun with lots of interactive games and competitions among students.
ESL teachers can easily sign in to the platform to teach and access the prepared courseware. You don’t need to be a native English speaker but should have native proficiency and accent, along with a bachelor’s degree.
Relevant teaching experiences and TEFL/TESOL Certification are preferred but optional.
Hujiang – Teach Adults Or Children Online
Hujiang is one of the largest language learning platforms in China, it teaches multiple languages (English, European languages, Japanese, Korea) for all student ages, adults, exam prep, college-level students, and children. Due to this, their teaching times span from 9 AM until 10 PM Beijing time. As of October 2017, they started to push for K-12 teachers.
The pay rate is transparent: from $12 to $20 per hour and $18-26 if you become a demo teacher. You will be teaching one-on-one with a student in a class, ranging from 5 to 15 years old and potentially adult as well. The class length is 25 minutes.
The hiring process is also straightforward and clear. Native English speakers from the United States, Canada, and the UK preferred.
A bachelor’s degree and TEFL or equivalent certificate are required.
Landi – Hiring Native Teachers
Landi pays up to $25 an hour. They also have an online chat for notifications and a help desk team to troubleshoot IT issues for their teachers. You’ll be teaching one or two students at a time.
The majority of your lessons have already been planned out and are available on the platform. You’re required to maintain at least 12 hours a week.
To apply for a job at Landi, you are preferred to be a native English teacher from the US, Canada, or the UK. You are expected to either hold a teacher certificate like TEFL/TESOL or have had relevant teaching experiences.
Shiliu – Higher Pay Longer Classes

Shiliu has the highest hourly rate above all but is a relatively new school that started in 2017 so a relatively small number of candidates will be hired, but it does not hurt to try if you have great qualifications to show off! Shiliu pays from $44 to $68 per hour.
Shiliu focuses on more advanced English learning. The student age range from 11 to 18 to learn English as native speakers. Class duration 60-90 minute long. Depending on your student class participation and performance per each lesson.
The hourly rate is calculated based on $20 per hour and minimal 3 students per class (Only has class if 3 or more students show up). Additional $8 per student showing up, up to 6 students. 3 x $8 = $24 (total $44) and up to 6 x $8 = $48 (total $68).
The hiring process is also straightforward and clear. Native English speakers from the US/Canada/UK/Australia/New Zealand/Ireland preferred. A bachelor’s degree and 2 years of teaching experience are required. TEFL or equivalent certification is preferred.
