Online ESL Teacher for eHello (ehailuo)
Summary(Review): eHello (ehailuo) hires native and non-native English teachers as long as they meet their requirements. It is common for some of the other Chinese schools to only hire teachers from the UK, US, and Australia, as an example. The pay is decent at $10-15 per hour. You will be teaching children using TRPS: Tri-Rounds-Role-Play-Scenario. The teacher and student will engage in role-playing through three rounds to help the student experience real-life scenarios. One negative piece of feedback is that the materials they use are not of high quality. That will end up costing you extra time as a teacher. All payments are made through PayPal or direct deposit at the end of the month. The classes are group lessons that are 50 minutes long. There are also one-on-one classes as well the last 50 minutes. They have classes from 8 AM to 8 PM every day. You must be available to work at least four days a week with 20 lessons available for students to book from 6 AM to 11 AM Beijing time.

Hello! As promised, I want to offer some insight on a company by the name of eHello (ehailuo).
I have been working with them for about 2 months now and I am beyond satisfied. When I was looking for online schools, someone from the school reached out to me via skype. I don’t really know how they got my contact info but they did.
As for the requirements, I’m not sure about them. I’m a native speaker with a standard American accent. I have about 7-8 years professional experience, a TESOL certificate, and an ITC Business English certificate. However, I don’t hold a degree as I’m only now completing my BA in TESOL.
The interview process is a little long. I feel like the whole interview process is a lot different in China than it is in the West. They aren’t very concrete about things. It’s like one day you’re being interviewed and the next you’re on the schedule. Not a lot of room for negotiation. Anyways, I had a series of interviews and about three demo classes? They all told me I was nervous which perhaps I was, I was just totally new to the Chinese culture and teaching online for a company.
Long story short, I got hired. I started at about 17 hours a week. And now I average 35 per week. However, my availability is open from Monday to Sunday from 1pm Beijing time to 8-11 pm. Sunday is a really busy day for me. But I’m based in Europe so I finish in the late afternoon at worst.
Every student has a TA which is great because you have round the clock support, training, etc. They really go above and beyond at giving constructive feedback to their teachers and just making them feel comfortable. Also, the TA’s job is to support you AND promote you. So he or she does their best to get you as many lessons as possible. The lessons are 50 minutes long, 40 minutes for first classes, and the materials are always provided and available for downloading once the lesson has been booked.
The salary is about $13/hr, which is not ideal for me, but when I consider all the benefits, bonuses, hours, and the fact that there is little preparation, it’s not so bad either. Plus, most importantly, THEY WILL PAY YOU. No scams here. You can be paid via pay pal, western union, whatever… The best part. If someone reserves your time slot then cancels, you get 20%. If a student is a no show you get 100% compensation. You can withdraw your salary once or twice a month.
Also, students range from children to adults. I personally prefer to work with adults and most of my lessons are either with students or professionals. I get lessons with kids from time to time. On your teacher profile, you mark the material/types of lessons you prefer teaching, and this is how your targt student will decide to book the lesson with you.
I hope that was clear and concise enough. If you have any questions, please let me know. I’m really suprised no one has mentioned the company before!

As Moy May requested, a review of eHello (eHailuo)
This was my first online teaching gig. I don’t work there anymore because I want to focus more on my classroom teaching, not because it is a bad place.
It’s a very relaxing company to work for. I hear a lot of horror stories about penalties at other places. eHello also has some penalties, but they are very fair and easy to avoid. They used to use Skype and QQ as a platform, but they are steadily implementing their own system. You might still need to use QQ at times though, so I suggest you familiarize yourself with QQ.
Pros:
They are very open. If you have any experience, even classroom experience, they are willing to look past things like degree or nationality. All you need is a firm command of English.
They pay on time, and they have a wide variety of payment options. Being from South Africa, getting paid via PayPal is a pain, so I welcomed the fact that they also have Western Union as a payment method. They do payouts twice a month, provided you taught at least 20 lessons after your last payout.
Schedule is very flexible. You open up slots every week. Each slot counts as a 50 minute lesson with 10 minutes to do your “comments”. You need to open at least one or two slots every week.
They have a lot of bonuses. 10% bonus if you teach a trial class, 5% if you teach kids. $15 for a group lesson.
Lot’s of adults. From what I read on this forum, a lot of these online jobs have you teaching kids. Here, you also get a fair share of adults. You can even specify that you only want to teach adults or business English, but then you miss out on the Kids English bonus.
Cons:
The salary is a bit low. I started off at $11 per lesson. My Ukrainian gf got $10 (the minimum). I think the maximum is $15.
Lesson materials are a bit sub-par. Not the best materials under the sun (sometimes downright horrible), but of course you can basically do what you want and just use their material as inspiration. The student books a topic, so as long as you stay on that topic, it should be fine.
They have a referral system but it sucks. It seems like they assign referral bonuses manually or something, and you frequently need to remind them to give you your bonus.
50 minutes is a bit long for kids. They start getting antsy near the 30 minute mark so you need to know your stuff when you teach kids in order to survive the full 50 minutes.
That’s basically it. This place is perfect for people who lack the papers or nationality for any of the big league companies, or people who just want a flexible, friendly company to work for.

I just had an interview with Ehello. I was born in the Philippines and raised in England (so I hold a British passport). The interviewer was offering me 25 RMB per lesson (around $3.82/ £2.88) because I was born in the Philippines. I explained that my living expenses are based in England and not Philippines and she insisted that I would be paid based on my demo performance (with the pay basis for a Filipino national). When she asked me if this was too low for me … of course I said “absolutely”. It’s a shame because having read the good reviews before, I actually looked forward to the interview.

It’s such a shame. I worked in Ehello for 2 years (or more). A month ago, I told my TA that I want to quit the job. She is ignoring my messages, she didn’t empty my account, and I am not paid, and I don’t believe I will ever get paid. I do not recommend this school to anyone!
