Abbreviated Review of Engliphone: I have been working for them for about 2 weeks, though I was hired early last month. Due to the holiday (Moon Festival) I just started taking classes. I committed to 4 hours/day 5 days/week at the wage of ~$18/hour. I teach between 7am-11am EST. The classes are split between about half audio only and half video. Most of my students are adults, but because of my experience and style, they also gave me a few children who are great and have intermediate level English. They are a Korean company, no Chinese. I chose to work for this company because I wanted to teach adults and wanted more guaranteed hours.
Gripes: I am 2 weeks in and my schedule is about 50-80% full each day with extended breaks. This may improve as I get more students, but this is just the current situation. I don’t like reserving 4 hours of time, when I could be making the same amount in 3 hours or less :/
The liaison for the company is friendly, but his English isn’t the best, so it is hard communicating at times and there have been many miscommunications.
Classes are back-to-back-to-back often with about 15 seconds between classes (when I do have a fuller schedule).
They say you can only take 7 days off/year 🙁 🙁
Positive: All of my students are great! The material is coherent and I don’t dread teaching! haha, this is a huge plus in my book, but I am still looking elsewhere due to the aforementioned reasons.
Oh, also the hours are pretty good for EST evenings and later mornings!

This is a very helpful review. Would you mind sharing an example or two of the miscommunications? How were they resolved? Also, since OET is a job you can do on the go, in what ways does it matter that they limit you to 5 days off per year?

That comment is from one of the teachers on our FB page. We are currently looking for a better comment and Q&A system on our site so that you can respond directly to the teacher.

Hey Megahan. I work for Engliphone. The 5 days off is a problem because they are unpaid. And they will make anything count towards those 5 days. Emergencies they’re pretty good about not having it count (I have unfortunately lost power or internet a couple times).
My jury duty day counts as a vacation day. Which limits my vacation days to 4 until the end of the year.
They have not specified what the consequences are for going above those 5 vacation days.
Most companies allow you to take as many unpaid days off as you want. For Engliphone not being a salary company (and severely cutting their rates in the past year), it is a very uncommon stance to limit the unpaid days off an employee can take.
In my experience, most companies allow you to open your own slots, that you can close at any time. And if you don’t want to work at a certain time. You just don’t open slots for that time.
It is one of the biggest reasons I am actively looking for another job.

can somebody help me apply?
Victoria Morgan says
Wow. I’m being seriously underpaid. They’re paying me $13.50 and they just cut my hours.
Christopher Michael Rousseau says
How do you actually get to apply to them?
Jason Tonkin says
Where to apply? The website is in Korean and google does not translate the website. Can anyone advise?
