Hi guys, here is my (long) review for Lingoda. I hope it answers all of your questions!
Lingoda is a German company based in Berlin, whose students are almost entirely adults. (I’ve taught 1 teenager and 1 child in 6 months.) They can be anywhere in the world, and depend mainly on your timezone. As I’m based in the UK most of my students are in Europe. I’ve heard of other teachers based in Thailand and the US.
Languages: At Lingoda you can teach English, German, French, or Spanish.
Requirements:
Native speaker: I believe they’re looking for native speakers only – this is what they have written on their website, and my students have told me that all of their teachers are native speakers. I don’t have any idea if this is flexible, sorry.
Computer: A good internet connection, using a PC or Mac – no iPads, tablets, or mobiles. You will likely be asked to send them a screenshot of your speed, but they don’t have a required minimum as far as I’m aware.
Accent: Again, I don’t know but I assume ‘native’ means from any English-speaking country.
Qualifications: I think pay depends on what qualifications you have. They don’t specify it on their website.
Pay: I started at €8.50/hour but after about a month and a half was given a raise (without asking) to €11/hour. At this point I was also asked to send them my qualifications. (BA and CELTA.)
You can choose to be paid via paypal, or bank transfer. Pay is monthly within 11 days after the end of the calendar month.
Hours: You’re free to choose as many or as few as you like. When hired I said that I’d do 10, which was totally fine. The only restriction is that as of Sept 1st, under German legislation, you will only be allowed to teach 15 group and 15 private lessons per week.
The hours you choose will show up in your timezone so you’re free to choose any you like. I teach between 7am and 10pm, but if I really wanted I could teach earlier or later.
Booking classes: Lingoda really encourage their students to learn from a variety of teachers, so you won’t be given set hours with the same students each week. You will log into your account where you have a weekly calendar populated with classes that are available to teach. When you choose a lesson it then shows up in your personal teaching calendar. In theory if your student likes you and wants to have you teach them again, and if they have given you 5 stars after your last lesson, their classes will show up in red on the calendar when they next book. This means that you see this lesson 6 hours before any other teachers. In practice this means that you need to be at your computer to see them, and I’ve had instances where, for whatever reason, even when in email contact with my student, I couldn’t grab these lessons. I have several regular students and we now make dates to book lessons to be on the safe side.
Class length: All classes are 60 minutes long. If you’ve got several in a row you can leave your class 2 or 3 minutes early to get ready for the next one.
Class reports/write-ups: These are a few sentences and take a couple of minutes to fill in. Mostly they’re for the other teachers so that they know what to expect from the student. I still haven’t figured out if the students even see these!
Cancellations/No-shows: If your student cancels a lesson within 48 hours of it, you receive 50% of the pay. Similarly, if they don’t show up for the lesson you must wait for 15 minutes and then log them as a no-show, for which you receive 50%.
You can cancel as many lessons as you like if they’re more than 48 hours in advance. If you cancel a lesson within 48 hours, your account will be blocked so that you can’t book any more classes for 2 weeks. You’ll be expected to teach the classes already in your schedule. In this case you can write to the admins, and if you have a good reason, they may be lenient. I cancelled one by mistake once and they quickly unblocked it. If you don’t show up for a lesson you get an email warning, but your account isn’t blocked. I’ve had one email warning when I wasn’t able to teach a class and I don’t know how many you get before they block your account.
Platforms: Individual classes are taught via Skype. You will set up a Lingoda account. Group classes are taught via Adobe Connect.
Materials: All lesson materials are provided. The students choose which lesson they want, and you will work through it together. In all honesty, I don’t find them very inspiring and there are often spelling and grammar errors in them. In terms of preparation, you don’t need to do a whole lot, but I do go through the presentations before the lesson and check for tricky words that will need definitions, and also check for any errors so that I’m aware of them before we get there.
Levels: Student levels range from A1 – C2.
Hiring process: I applied via their website: https://www.lingoda.com/en/english/become-teacher
I don’t think there’s any referral bonus for teachers, though if anyone wants to study with them let me know because I’ve got a referral code for that!
Interview: I had to teach a trial lesson to one of the Lingoda staff. They’d given me some materials on the present perfect and I went through them. To be honest, I’d never taught online and brought a whiteboard to draw a timeline on! The recruiter said after – uh, you could just use the chat here on Skype… After the mock lesson I was emailed the next day with an employment offer, and we met on Skype two days after that for ‘onboarding’ which meant being shown how to use Adobe connect, and the teacher calendar, etc. I then booked my first lesson for the next morning. So in effect, I had my interview on Tuesday afternoon and was teaching on Saturday morning.
Non-compete clause: Freelance teachers with Lingoda are allowed to work with other companies, provided that there’s no conflict of interest.
Positive aspects: I love the complete flexibility of it – you can go on holiday for 2 weeks and don’t need to notify anybody. The admin team are in the office during the week and generally get back to you quickly. If, for example, a student says you didn’t show up and you send a screenshot of your Skype, which clearly shows that you did, they will believe you with no questions asked and make sure that you’re paid for the student’s no-show.
Negative aspects (for me): The pay. The other main complaint I have is that I find it difficult to keep the same students. I have a few who really want me to teach them but we’ve come across problems booking our lessons together.
Other than this, I’ve found it hard to get a lot of hours lately through them. I would recommend Lingoda as a place to pick up extra hours, but don’t expect to make a full-time living from it. Of course, it’s summer now so a lot of people are on holiday and I expect once September comes it’ll pick up again.
If anyone’s interested in applying after reading this, please apply via the link, and good luck!
Note:
- This information is mostly outdated because we have removed the “preferred teacher function”. However, it is still true that classes will show up red if you have taught the student before.
- Students do see the feedback and so it is important to do a good job.
-
This has changed we use Zoom now for both group and private classes. You do not need an account, just need to have the platform downloaded.
- Of course, the teachers are allowed to their opinion but since this review was written we have done A LOT of improvements on the material and the quality has significantly increased.
