Past Teacher says
Chan asked me to do a “short write-up” of my company, UStalk, so here it is.
I’ve been working with them for about 5 months and it’s been great. Pay is $16-$24 USD per hour (plus bonuses) and based on how you perform in your demo. The initial interview was via skype, about 5-10 minutes followed immediately by a short 15-minute demo, they supplied me with the demo material in advance. After this they scheduled me for the real demo via their platform. They told me exactly how I would be “graded”. They also had example videos and lots of self-training material.
Classes are 25 minutes long and mostly during Beijing peak times. You have to open at least 10 slots (5 hours) each week but it doesn’t have to be the same hours every week. You can open more and choose how much you want to be available. You should open slots during peak times. You always get 24 hours notice before a class, you can accept last minute classes and get a short-notice bonus. You have to provide feedback for every class in order to get paid.
It is not guaranteed that you will get classes, especially in the beginning. You create a profile, upload a picture and send them a 15-second introduction video which goes on the site. The parents/students choose their teacher for each and every class. If a student likes you, they are likely to book you again. If you have a bad class or cancel on them, they will likely look elsewhere. Some people get a full schedule right away, others don’t. You really have to market yourself and keep up your game to keep a consistent schedule.
The lessons are consistent, well-developed and fairly easy to teach. The students are typically 6-12 years old and its one-on-one. The company is based in Beijing and medium sized, not too corporate but big enough to have decent IT support, resources, training and curriculum. They are very transparent with their policies. There is a teacher chat room where you can talk about your classes/whatever with other teachers or ask questions. They also have “Zendesk” as a support/resource website. They evaluate your classes and give you feedback and sometime bonuses based on your performance.
They provide a clear breakdown of their payment policies. If you are late, don’t fill up the 25 minutes or cancel a class within a certain time period they will deduct it from your pay. They have special classes where you get paid more but I don’t know much about these as I don’t do any of them. Like most Chinese companies, payment is once a month, they recommend paypal.
I can’t think of anything else, so if you have questions just ask. I do get a referral bonus so I would really appreciate it if you send me a message if you are going to apply. I’ve included the recruitment video to give an idea what they’re looking for. Sorry for the super long post (it was supposed to be short), just wanted to be as detailed as possible.
