Abroad ESL Teacher Job Description
Campus Culture:
DYB Bundang is a lively branch. The children at Bundang are from competitive middle schools in the Seongnam area. We are proud to say that our academic standards meet this demand; the branch has some of the most experienced teachers and staff. Due to its location, it is considered to be one of the powerhouses of DYB. Therefore, the branch seeks teachers with great enthusiasm and dedication for teaching. There are 10-12 native teachers at Bundang. The team shares a wide range of teaching experiences and styles. The current collective DropBox system at DYB cuts time that goes into lesson preparation because fewer lessons are required from each teacher per week. As such, there is more time to discuss future lessons and any teaching-related topics. Teachers will typically teach only elementary students (ages 10-13) or only middle school students (14-17); rarely will a teacher be expected to teach both. This allows the teacher to develop specific skills and insight that pertains to a certain age group. We believe here in Bundang that a motivated teacher is just as important as the material they teach. With a reputation for high academic standards, Bundang seeks staff that is committed, talented, and caring. It is important that new teachers show passion and care for the students and co-workers. Take the time to find out about your students and co-workers. Lastly, the relationship with your Korean co-teacher is paramount to a productive class. At Bundang, you will not feel the pressure to please them but rather, it will come naturally. Korean staffs here are friendly and accommodating, and they will offer you great insight into culture and lifestyles.
Overview of the General Area:
Bundang is one of the newer satellite cities in Korea. The area is immaculate and is built along the Tancheon River. You’ll find it offers all the amenities of a large city. The area hosts European-style street cafes, Korean and western cuisine, entertainment centers, malls, and a ton of other facilities that make living in Bundang easy. If you’re a pet lover and enjoy nature, the Tancheon River allows for a nice stroll or a picnic. Though Bundang is not the closest branch to Seoul, getting to Seoul is by no means difficult. A bus or subway journey will take approximately one hour to reach Seoul central station. Though this does not sound appealing at first, it does come with several perks. Firstly, the shops and prices are generally cheaper than most places in Seoul. Secondly, the people are more relaxed and more inquisitive to meet foreigners. Thirdly, Bundang has created its own life and entertainment, notably the AK plaza – a huge entertainment district. The biggest selling point would be the ample free space in Bundang. Bundang is a megacity, but it is also built among striking mountain ranges and forests. Due to the rapid urbanization of Korea, nature is often compromised to make way for cities. However, Bundang, with the perks of being a newer city, still harbors some beautiful areas like the Bundang central park and the Tancheon River. Bundang branch teachers claim their housing to be one of the best. It is a one-room studio complete with a western-style bathroom. The accommodation is located less than 5 minutes away (on foot) from work, which makes it very cost-efficient for teachers. During the winter and summer months, teachers find this to be especially convenient.
Abroad ESL Teacher Job Requirements
Native English Speaker
You MUST be a native English speaker to teach English in Korea – English being your first spoken language. People with ‘very mild accents’ may still be eligible; however, you will need to provide supporting documentation that verifies your education was conducted in English and within one of the 7 designated English speaking countries (as outlined by the Korean Ministry of Justice) from the start of grade 7 through to, and including, the university level.
Nationality
You MUST have citizenship and a valid passport from one of the following English speaking countries: Australia, Britain, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, or United States.
Education
You must have a bachelor’s level degree, or greater, from an accredited university or college – all majors and disciplines are accepted (BA’s, BFA’s, BED’s, BBA’s, BSS, etc.).
Note:
The university or college you attended must be located within 1 of the 7 countries listed in the Nationality section above. Example: An American citizen who graduated from a university in Spain is not eligible for jobs with DYB schools and programs. Haven’t graduated yet? Teachers who are in the process of completing their university degree (bachelor’s or greater) can apply for jobs with DYB before they’ve obtained their degree & diploma (certain conditions apply).
Health – (Mental and Physical)
As a teacher you’ll be required to have good physical and mental health. If you have any ongoing health issues please inform a DYB representative so that he/she can inform you about the potential obstacles with immigration. It’s not impossible to obtain employment with minor health problems, although it’s important to let the school know in advance so they’re aware of any potential problems that may affect your responsibilities as a teacher.
Note:
All teachers are required to submit a Korean Immigration Health Questionnaire before securing their visa. Secondly, all teachers are required to complete a health examination at a designated medical clinic upon arrival. If you falsify information on your health questionnaire in order to secure a visa, then immigration will most likely find out when you complete the real health examination in Korea. Please be advised: If immigration concludes that you falsified information on your health questionnaire then your visa will be revoked and you will be forced to leave the country at your own expense.
Note:
anyone with a virus in their system (STD’s, STI’s, other) that’s potentially transferable to others (students or the general population) is automatically screened by Korean Immigration.
Criminal History
It is very rare for the Immigration Office to grant visa issuance numbers to candidates even with ’minor’ blemishes on their criminal record checks. It is essentially at their discretion to approve or decline visas. To qualify for positions with DYB, all applicants must have a clean criminal abstract (e.g. no charges, arrests or convictions appearing on your criminal record check).
Note:
Traffic violations (e.g. speeding tickets, parking tickets, etc.) will not affect your application. We regret to inform applicants with drinking and driving related charges that your application will not be accepted. Refer to our Background Checks page for proper details and related links.
DYB does not have age restriction policies. Most of the education offices in Korea (public schools) currently have a 60 year age limit on teachers; however, candidates over 49 years of age generally require related majors (i.e. education, English or linguistics) and formal classroom teaching experience in order to be considered. Private schools don’t have specific age requirements but the fact is most schools will only consider younger teachers – primarily between the ages of 22 – 35. We do our best to accommodate as many candidates as possible in this sector but as recruiters we’re limited to the hiring practices and demands of the schools in Korea.
Note:
DYB charges schools the same recruitment fee regardless of the candidate’s age. Again, age restrictions have nothing to do with DYB policies or preferences – we’re not only third party recruiters, but also employers.
