31abc is a reputable mid-size ESL company based in Shanghai embraced by many teachers. 31abc takes care of their teachers and provides stable teaching hours with a fixed schedule and the same recurring students. Small size class, up to 3 students age 4 to 12 years old. They only hire native English speakers. 31abc accepts non-degree holders if you have extensive teaching experience. Having a TEFL/TESOL/TESL certificates along with teaching experience with kids is a plus. You must have good computer skills and a good internet connection since you will be using Zoom. Teachers have the same students 3 days a week with teaching materials provided, either MWF or Tue-Thu-Sat 6-10 pm Beijing time for one year. That means very stable teaching hours and income. 31abc have a competitive salary at $16-18 base per hour + $4 bonus based on performance. As a result, the hourly rate ranges from $20-22 including bonuses. Different from most of the schools, you only have one review per month instead of after every single class since you’re having the same students again and again. 9 hours of minimal weekly hour commitment and minimal 6 months commitment.

Working Hours and Class Types

31abc has a fixed class schedule “Regular class + Stable Schedule”. Meaning you will have the same students every single week.

Why a fixed schedule?

31abc believes that if the students practice English regularly with a stable language coach, they can learn progressively faster. “Practice Makes Perfect”. In order for you to build a better relationship and rapport with young kids, you need to make efforts to be with them and coach them continuously and then they will be more comfortable with old friends of you rather than another stranger.

• Lessons are delivered throughout one year period
• Classes start at each half-hour, so there is a total of 8-time slots each day.
• Trial classes: 28 min/class, during one of your availabilities.
• Regular classes: 28min/class, held three times a week, once every other day (for example, MWF).

What are the classes like?

• A trial class is given during a one-time slot and will help you give the first impression to our students.
• If they like the class you gave them, the parents may sign up their child for a regular class with you.
• There will usually be 1-2 students in each trial class.
• Regular classes will provide students with a consistent coach and courseware suited to the observed level of the students.
• Students will confirm the time and the coach at the beginning for the whole duration of their course. Students usually enroll for an average of 1-2 years.

• The software ZOOM is used to deliver the class.

Online ESL Teacher Job Requirements

• Minimal weekly commitment: 1.5 hours (3 28-min classes)
• Contract Length: min of 6 months
• Bachelor’s  degree or above (Education, linguistics or English degree preferred)
• Must be native English speakers, US/Canada/UK preferred.
• TEFL/TESOL/CELTA  or other teaching certificate preferred
• 1+ year teaching experience preferred.

Online ESL Teacher Salary and Compensation

• Hourly rate of $20-22 where the base rate is $16-18/hour and $4 per hour
• $4 per hour bonus based on performance, where is based on the monthly review
• All trial classes will get paid doubled if students sign up, regardless of the first 3 or not. If students sign up within the first 3 classes, from that class onwards, teachers get paid.
• The bonus rate is $2 per class. Your bonus will be judged by your punctuality together with 31abc’s QC’s evaluation. Both wages and bonuses are calculated based on a 1 month period.
• Payments are given on the 10th of each month. Teachers are paid through Payoneer monthly.

Bonuses

• Monthly star teacher: 10 USD
• Teaching activity:50-100 USD
• Quarterly: 100 USD( the first three months)
• Student enrollment: double pay of base wage (trial class only)

Payment

• The payment consists of a base wage and a bonus.
• The bonus will be judged by your attendance together with Quality Control’s evaluation of 31abc.
• Both wages and bonuses are calculated based on a 1 month period. Payments are given on the 10th of each month.

3. Thirdly, try to make your demo class as interesting as possible, you can bring flashcards, teaching puppets and games to your demo class. Also, you’re allowed to use google images and youtube videos to help you teach.

31abc values students’ English output so try to minimize your talking time and maximize the students’ talking time. As a 31abc coach, you will have more flexibility in your teaching and don’t just ask the student to repeat what is written on the teaching slides. Before the official class

• The prospective teacher must apply and go through two rounds of interviewing and provide a demo class.
• Then, when it has been decided that the prospective teacher has performed sufficiently, they may move on to the training phase which covers the use of the courseware, software, and other requirements needed to administer these classes, along with tests for each of these criteria.
• Once the applicant has passed this phase will he or she be welcomed into the company fully and be allowed to start teaching classes.

At this job, they offer the best of both worlds: competitive pay and working from the comfort home. Depending on my performance each month 31Abc also gives cash bonuses to encourage consistent and good work performance such as being on time for class. Whether it is avoiding the winter, working multiple jobs, or having other projects, this job accommodates YOUR schedule and starts our day as coaches on a positive note with happy and adorable students. This job sets my day up for success since I am done classes between 9 and 10 am which leaves the rest of my day open.

The support staff, homeroom teachers and managers make the application process with 31Abc is simple. After submitting my resume I was promptly contacted by 31Abc to set up a series of video interviews to talk about my experience with children, to show how my personality compatible with children and to do a mock trial class with an employee. A smile, the use of TPR, being ready with the learning material they give you, additional teaching aids such as a puppet or doll and adjusting to the student’s pace are great tips to pass the mock trial class. Despite the company being an ocean away I was supported all the way through the whole application process, the managers were quick to answer questions and give more information as I needed it, which made for a confident start with this amazing company.

31Abc sets their coaches up for success, they give the teaching material and content as well as a break down of every unit for each level. The levels range from level 0 where we each the students are phonetics and the alphabet all the way to level 5 where students can speak in paragraphs and investigate more complex topics at a deeper level. I have taught a range of English speaking levels with student who are primarily 3-10 years old keeping by daily schedule and student interaction very interesting.

It is easy to get into contact with all of the 31Abc employees because the line of communication is through a free messaging app, WeChat. Not only do they have a group with our homeroom teachers who act as the mainline of communication with parents and organize our classes, but they also have a group chat with other coaches. It is very accessible to talk to other coaches and ask for suggestions, solutions to problems, and to get additional teaching ideas. Once a month there is a group meeting via video chat, where 31Abc updates us on any new information about the company and a star coach gives a seminar on a range of topics that many coaches are having trouble with or would like to know more about. I love these meetings because I really feel like part of a community while sharpening my teaching skills.

I have been working at 31abc for a year now and time has flown by because I love this job so much. This job offers such a good balance in pay, enjoyment and flexibility. Over the many months I have developed relationships with my students because I see them 2-3 times a week which has added another level of enjoyment to my daily work life. These students are smart and love to tell you more about them, their family and their culture. As the weeks go by with each student, it is extremely rewarding to watch them grow and progress towards reaching their English goals. I would highly recommend this job, I wake up everyday excited to start work.
