I am considering quitting my full-time job teaching in public school to work at home teaching online. In order to maintain my standard of living in the Midwest, United States, I would need to earn $2000-$3000 per month, consistently. Is it possible to earn that amount teaching online? Which companies work best together to extend my teaching day?
Yes, you can earn that much teaching ESL online if you get a job at VIPKid, DaDaABC, Magic Ears, Landi and many of the other Chinese schools you find in the list for Chinese Schools. You will need a full schedule to accomplish this and you will be working seven days a week. Take VIPKid for example. Their peak hours are Beijing(GMT+8) Mon-Fri 6-10pm and Sat-Sun 9am–10pm. Total hours if you have a full schedule during the week and you pick up some hours on the weekend. To be safe, we will put it at 28 hours a week. Take that and an hourly rate of $21 an hour and you end up at $2,352 per month.
What you are going to find is that many teachers will get a job with one of the major companies teaching Chinese kids and then find another job to supplement their income when they are not working those peak hours. As an example, you could work at Magic Ears, Landi or DaDaABC and also work at Cambly or another phone app job. The teacher might also work at a job in the European time zone teaching adults online. The European jobs are listed here and there is an article on teaching adults ESL here.
Some teachers combine the Chinese jobs with the create a profile job. Those jobs are not as good as they used to be. Verbling is one of the top jobs. Oh, and Vivaling is based in Singapore, but many of their students are European children.
