The English Mom
I use a method I call The English Mom. When you were younger and would make a mistake your mom would not point you to a grammar rule. She would simply correct you and move on. Of course, there are times where she would go into more detail as to what mistake you made.
“I like dog”. “Oh, you like dogs… that is what you want to say”.
When teaching adults you correct them by repeating back their errors with the corrections. You have to decide the frequency based on the student. Students from Japan love to be corrected while an Italian student would rather keep talking. Of course, this is a generalization and each student is different.
As the lesson moves along you will write down all of their errors. This includes ones you correct and ones that you do not.
Save some time at the end of the lesson to go through the errors and corrections. Have the students repeat the correct answer.
Error: “Last week I went see the doctor” “Oh, last week you went to see the doctor”
Student, you forgot the article to. Here is a link to a lesson on articles.
List out the error, what the issue is, and give a link to an article covering the grammar rule. Do this same thing for pronunciation errors as well.
For pronunciation have your students subscribe and use Rachel’s English. Direct them to the playlists. They are highly useful since they group together the lessons. Work through the lessons with them in your regular lessons.
Perform searches on YouTube.com using the terms esl pronunciation + what you need help with. Example: esl pronunciation th. Example: esl pronunciation vowel sounds. Example: esl pronunciation Italian accent. When you practice your pronunciation record and listen to yourself. Follow up with these in your next live lessons.
When students are learning English they tend to be nervous when speaking. Due to this, they end up using filler words. This can become a rather bad habit. Teach your students this lesson.
Have your students record themselves during your lessons. Have them go back to listen to how they sound. This is an effective way for them to understand the issues with their accent. Windows and Mac computers have built-in sound recording devices for free or they can simply use their phone.
Platform For Teaching Adults
This platform falls short for teaching children but is the best one for teaching adults. The platform is Off2Class. There is an ever-expanding library of lessons that you assign to your students along with homework.
This is a full-fledged platform for teachers to work off of. You are able to white label the experience for your students by changing the logo and login. At the beginning of 2018, they launched a new offering where you can fully use your own url.
They have an ESL placement test you can use to onboard new students. Once they are finished with the test generates a custom student gap analysis and individual learning plan.
If you click on this link you will receive $5 off your first payment of Off2Class. Let me know if you signup through the referral link and I will show you how to white label OffClass.
Did you know about Duolingo for schools? This allows you to assign work to your students and track their progress. It is free to you as a teacher and has an extremely easy to use interface. You are required to become certified with them. The certification process is straightforward and should take less than one hour.
