I got hired by Goldenvoice a couple of weeks ago. Still in the training stage (my fault, I’ve been taking my time with the modules, but should finish by tomorrow)
Anyways, it’s video lessons to Chinese kids, $18/hr or $20/hr Canadian(yes, I know it doesn’t add up, but that’s what they said), Hours are 6-10am EST Mon-Sat, with 6 hours/week peak time being the minimum requirement (peak being 7-9am EST) Payments monthly by direct deposit. “Native English fluency required”(interpret as you wish), BA/TEFL desired, but apparently not required because I don’t have a BA. But they do ask for 3 months experience. They also ask that you live in or are legally able to work in the US or Canada and have a bank account there for monthly direct deposits. Apparently they are hiring this month and are doing an employee referral program. Contact me if you like and I can put the referral in for you. (Yes, I’d get a kickback~ if I remember the group rules correctly I think this is ok as long as I disclose it. Please inform me if it’s not and I can take this down) I still haven’t started teaching but I’d happy to answer any questions you may have as much as I can 🙂

So my first day with Golden Voice English was a bit nutty. They called me this morning and said they can schedule me for two classes, one at 2pm (my time) and one at 3pm. These are classes I’ll keep for the next two weeks. I was really glad to get that call. So I taught my 2pm class and then waited for my 3pm class and no one showed up. There were supposed to be three students in there so I knew something wasn’t right. I messaged tech support and that was pretty much useless. (I didn’t know if maybe I was doing something wrong.) At 3:25pm a CT (Chinese teacher) comes in and is waiting for me to teach a 3:30pm class. I said, uhhh ok. So I went ahead and taught the 3:30pm class but she was also expecting me to teach a 4pm class! I told her I couldn’t teach that class and I wasn’t scheduled to in the first place. Thankfully, they got a substitute teacher in there.
Now that I think of it, I bet I didn’t even teach that 3:30 class the right curriculum! I just taught them the curriculum I already had pulled up for my 3pm class. And thinking further, my 2pm class didn’t seem to understand much of what I was teaching her. I wonder if I was even teaching her the correct curriculum! Oy vey!
This isn’t a knock against GVE. I have a pretty good opinion of their Canadian side of things. They get stuff done. But at every twist and turn, I’m learning that dealing with Chinese employees is never going to be a good experience. I’m REALLY glad GVE has a Canadian tutor support line that we can call for when the Chinese side of things goes screwy. (And it definitely will eventually.)
